The rise in the price of 155mm shells, the standard caliber of the United States, soared to 500 million euros per 10,000 rounds during the Ukraine war, and the European Union proposed a’joint purchase’ similar to a corona vaccine.
EU foreign ministers are expected to discuss the joint procurement of 155mm shells, which Ukraine desperately needs, at a meeting in Brussels on the 20th, Reuters reported.
"Now is the time to speed up production and expand production of standardized products that Ukraine desperately needs," said European Commission President Von der Leyen. It can be similar to,” he said at the European Security Conference on the 18th.
"Ukraine is using shells faster than its allies can currently produce them," NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said.
Regarding the shortage of 155mm shells, Reuters said, “The joint procurement effort will aim to replenish Ukraine’s allies’ stockpiles, which have been severely depleted after a year of supplying munitions to help Ukraine fight off a Russian invasion,” according to an Estonian newspaper. Ukrainian forces fire between 2,000 and 7,000 shells a day, while Russia uses between 20,000 and 60,000.”
"Diplomats and officials did not specify how much the EU would spend on joint procurement, but an Estonian newspaper suggested it could purchase 10,000 155mm rounds this year for around 400 million euros," Reuters said.
Regarding co-procurement funds, the EU Council approved 300 million euros on the 17th as support for Ukraine from the approval of the funding provided individually by member states.
“Today, the EU Council adopted measures under the European Peace Facility (EPF) providing additional military support to the armed forces of Ukraine,” the EU Council said in an announcement today. I will bring it to,” he said.
“This consists of a seventh package valued at 50 billion euros and a new 450,000 euro support measure to support training efforts of the European Union Military Assistance Mission (EUMAM) in support of Ukraine,” the statement said.
Regarding the joint procurement of shells, the European Defense Agency (EDA) had engaged in a joint procurement effort with EU member states in 2014 on the purchase of ammunition for anti-tank weapons, and had offered to lead another ammunition procurement effort.
“We have offered member states that we can act on their behalf to procure different types of ammunition,” EDA chief executive Jiri Sedivy told Reuters.

The Wall Street Journal reported on November 11 of last year that the United States plans to purchase 100,000 155mm shells from South Korea in support of Ukraine.
The WSJ continued, “South Korea’s arms support will allow the United States to supply weapons to Ukraine without further touching the rapidly dwindling US ammunition stocks. Defense Minister Lee Jong-seop met with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin earlier this month and agreed in principle on the shell trade,” it said.
