Gaza hospital rocket 'Iron Dome' shot down by AP: 'Ascending impossible'

In response to the ‘Iron Dome shooting down theory’, which is the most powerful social media theory about the rocket exploding at the Gaza hospital, AP stated, ‘There is no possibility of the rocket being shot down during the ascent.’
AP said, “In the days following the explosion, speculation circulated on social media that the rocket's disintegration and ground explosion were caused by Israel's Iron Dome defense system, which is designed to fire rockets from the sky. “We said we would intercept and destroy rockets entering Israeli airspace without using any,” he said on the 21st.
The AP continued, “Experts also noted that several videos of the hospital explosion showed no visible evidence that an Iron Dome missile was launched from Israel over Gaza.”
“It may be technically possible for the Iron Dome to intercept a missile over Gaza, but in this case the projectile's flight path would have been different,” said John Erath, a missile defense expert and senior policy director at the Center for Arms Control. “This is highly unlikely because it was in the early stages (still ascending) and the system is designed to intercept only projectiles that it determines are in its flight path,” he told the AP.
“I’m not saying it’s impossible,” he told the AP, “but based on my understanding of how the system works, it’s highly unlikely.”
“You don’t engage a target unless it affects critical assets such as population centers, power grids, and military bases,” he said of the Iron Dome theory by former U.S. Army sergeant major David Shank, an expert on military rockets and missiles. “Technically, the highest kill is possible. It is designed to take the best shot that provides probability. And for the Iron Dome, it does not go beyond Gaza,” he said, adding that the rocket shootdown was designed to occur over Israel, not the Gaza Strip.
Hamas spokesman Ghazi Hamad told The Associated Press that he would welcome a United Nations investigation into the cause of the explosion. “Look at the ridiculous position of the President of the United States saying, ‘I agree with Israel’s version,’ without any investigation. Unfortunately, the Western world “is full of hypocrisy,” he said.
The Associated Press reported that a visual analysis was conducted by five or six experts, who all agreed that the most likely scenario was that a rocket launched from within the Gaza Strip deflected and disintegrated seconds before exploding.
The AP continued, “Israel's extensive arsenal includes small missiles that can be launched from helicopters and drones, but there is no public evidence of such a missile attack in the area around Al Ahli Arab Hospital on Tuesday night.”
The Gaza hospital bombing occurred on Tuesday, just before 7 p.m., when a rocket launch lit up the dark sky of the Gaza Strip. The Associated Press directly analyzed the video at the time and said, “It shows a projectile going off course, breaking up in the air, and crashing to the ground.” “Seconds later, video shows a massive explosion in the same area, on the grounds of Al-Ali Arab Hospital in Gaza,” the report said.
The AP analyzed more than a dozen videos, satellite images and photos of before, during and after the hospital explosion. AP's analysis found that the rocket that broke up in the air was fired from within Palestinian territory and that the hospital explosion occurred when part of the rocket crashed to the ground. It was stated that it was most likely to have occurred.
“The most likely hypothesis is that it was a Palestinian rocket, exploded with a charge of about 5 kilos, and Palestinian groups have small-diameter rockets with that type of explosive,” French military intelligence (DRM) told reporters on the 21st. “We ruled out various possibilities, including debris from the Iron Dome air defense system or interceptor missiles,” Reuters reported.
The French DRM report was unable to provide an exact point of departure for the failed rocket and did not hold any specific group responsible. The report did not estimate the death toll but said it was likely less than 471 given the impact.
In this report, Reuters contrasted with France, saying, “According to a confidential U.S. intelligence report reviewed on the 20th, Israel determined that it was not responsible for the explosion and estimated the death toll at 100-300.”
“We normally do not disclose such information, but following instructions from President Emmanuel Macron, we have decided to make the findings of the investigation public in light of the contrasting accounts of who is responsible,” DRM told reporters.
The DRM report concluded: “The explosion at the Gaza hospital was not the result of an Israeli missile attack, but was likely caused by a malfunction of a Palestinian rocket.”
“Based on an analysis conducted independently by the Canadian Forces Intelligence Command, we have a high level of confidence that Israel did not attack Al-Ahli Hospital on October 17, 2023,” Canada's Department of National Defense said in a statement on the 22nd.
“It is more likely that this strike was caused by an errant rocket launched from the Gaza Strip,” the Canadian statement said. “The Department of Defense’s conclusion was based on open source analysis and confidential reporting.”
