With the strengthening of the ROK-U.S. strategy, the US was guaranteed a “space warfare on the Korean Peninsula” and South Korea intervened in US intelligence warfare.
In a joint statement, the ROK-U.S. extended deterrence consultation aimed at the North Korean nuclear threat announced on the 16th that it would use all available means, including diplomatic, informational, military, and economic means, to strengthen deterrence against North Korea's offensive actions and respond to the North Korean threat.
The ROK and the U.S. will continue to explore ways of working together to enhance the strategic readiness of the Alliance through enhanced information sharing, training, and exercises related to nuclear and non-nuclear threats, including better use of TTX, and They agreed to strengthen continuous cooperation in the space and cyber domains, such as participation in expanded multi-domain exercises, as well as to enhance cooperation in relation to missile response capabilities and postures.
The Korea-U.S. Extended Deterrence Strategy Consultative Group (EDSCG), which was held as a 2+2 meeting between the Vice Foreign Ministers and the Vice Ministers of Defense, was the first to respond to the threat of a nuclear attack by North Korea, and the U.S. will use its nuclear umbrella and missile defense system to provide a level equivalent to the threat to the U.S. mainland. From the concept of providing deterrence, it was expanded to space warfare and information warfare. EDSCG was launched in October 2016 according to North Korea's nuclear and missile development, and was suspended due to the second meeting of the Moon Jae-in government in January 2018.
The meeting held today at the US State Department announced that any nuclear attack by North Korea would be overwhelming and would face a decisive response, and confirmed the form in which South Korea was guaranteed to strengthen consultations on the US nuclear and missile defense policy.
In the EDSCG joint statement, the United States stated “the ironclad and unshakable commitment of the United States to provide extended deterrence to the Republic of Korea by utilizing all categories of military capabilities, including nuclear, conventional, missile defense, and advanced non-nuclear capabilities,” and the deployment of strategic assets to the Korean Peninsula. It was expanded to nearby areas and expanded to include strategic bombers.
At the Supreme People's Assembly on the 8th, North Korea specified the use of nuclear weapons as a nuclear force policy law, when it is judged that an enemy attack is imminent or that it is deemed unavoidable in operation.
“We have decided to respond overwhelmingly and decisively to any attack from North Korea, including tactical nuclear weapons,” said Vice Foreign Minister Cho Hyun-dong during a press conference after the meeting. We have reconfirmed the full mobilization of all military forces, including the non-nuclear forces that have been used,” said Vice Minister of Defense Shin Beom-cheol. It means progress in Korea-U.S. cooperation,” he said.
On the 17th, Jeong Seong-jang, head of the North Korea Center at the Sejong Institute, said, “It is desirable not to respond with an overwhelming and decisive response, but rather for an ‘immediate and automatic’ nuclear retaliation that corresponds to the level of North Korea’s nuclear attack and its damage.” He criticized it as a level agreement that could not again agree on 'immediate and automatic' US nuclear retaliation in proportion to the level of nuclear attack, and that the US could not realistically keep it, and if it does, it is highly likely to escalate into an all-out nuclear war between the South and North Korea. .
