Chinese battery manufacturer CATL has begun expanding its low-cost batteries by offering cost reductions and discounted battery prices for Chinese automakers.
On the 27th, Reuters reported on a “low price discount” by interviewing four people familiar with the conditions for offering battery discount prices to electric vehicle manufacturers.
The battery discount price offer discounted battery prices, which have risen in price over the past year, and even included a built-in cost that the price of lithium carbonate, a key mineral in batteries, will drop by more than half, officials told Reuters.
"There's a price war going on," Eric Norris, president of energy storage at Albemarle, the world's largest producer of lithium for electric vehicles, told Reuters. "We saw it at the vehicle level a few weeks ago, and now we're seeing it at the battery level. "We're trying to leverage consolidation to bring down prices."
"It's a very strong market share game," Caspar Rawles, chief data officer at Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, told Reuters. "I think it's partly a price war."
The spot price of lithium carbonate in China, the core of batteries, has fallen by about 30% since peaking last year.
The price drop came as inventory was sold off fears that the end of China's state EV subsidy would slow growth.
Reuters said China's CATL's investments in lithium mining and refining already demonstrate cost-reduction advantages and a determination to break down the corporate challenge of smaller Chinese rivals such as CALB and EVE Energy, which are ramping up factories this year. conditions for proving and expanding China's cost advantage in electric vehicles."
CATL has faced some backlash from Chinese automakers over its market dominance and price cuts in China, and Chinese regulators made a visit to CATL on the 23rd, but did not release the results of the investigation.
Detroit-based battery industry consultant Prabhakar Patil told Reuters that the price of battery cells from EV makers rose about 24 per cent last year.
Changjiang Securities estimates that CATL's discount offer represents a total discount of about 6 per cent from regular prices in China if automakers accept half of their planned purchases.
James Frith, president of battery technology venture capital group Volta Energy Technologies, said: “The price reductions CATL is offering will help the Chinese electric vehicle industry. Trade tensions could arise once it arrives in Europe," he told Reuters.
For Kia Motors' Nino, the installation of CATL's batteries instead of LG Energy Solutions' batteries began last year.
On January 20, GM of the United States announced the breakdown of its fourth battery plant joint venture with LG Ensol.
China's CATL's lithium phosphate battery is about 30% cheaper than ternary batteries such as LG Ensol's SK On in Korea.
