Mossad Booby-trapped Pager Operation Creates Fake World and Promotes YouTube
It has been revealed that the Mossad operation that attacked Hezbollah with booby-trapped pager explosions was created by creating a fake world and promoting it on YouTube.
Two recently retired senior Israeli intelligence officers have revealed new details about a deadly covert operation targeting Hezbollah militants in Lebanon and Syria using explosive pagers and walkie-talkies three months ago on CBS' "60 Minutes."
The secret agents wore masks and disguised voices to hide their identities on CBS' "60 Minutes" airing on the evening of the 22nd.
"We created a fake world," one agent said. "When they buy from us, they have no idea they are buying from Mossad. We control everything behind the scenes, like the 'Truman Show.' In their experience, everything is normal. The businessmen, the marketing, the engineers, the showroom, everything is 100 percent clean." He likened the scheme to a 1998 psychological film in which “a man is completely unaware that he is living in a false world, and his family and friends are paid actors to maintain the illusion,” he said.
The second phase of the scheme, using booby-trapped pagers, began in 2022 after Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency discovered that Hezbollah was buying pagers from a Taiwan-based company, the agent said. “The pagers had to be slightly larger to accommodate the hidden explosives inside, and they were tested on dummies several times to find the right amount of explosives that would only hurt Hezbollah fighters and not anyone else nearby.”
The second agent, who goes by the pseudonym “Gabriel,” said it took two weeks to convince the Mossad chief to sell him the heavier pagers.
He said the reason for this was that the devices were advertised on YouTube using false advertising that claimed they were dustproof, waterproof and had long battery life. He explained that he used front companies, including one based in Hungary, to trick the Taiwanese company Gold Apollo into unknowingly working with Mossad.
Hezbollah purchased and stored about 5,000 explosive-laden pagers, without even realizing that they were ultimately working with Israel.
The AP reported on the 24th that “Mossad tested numerous ringtones to find one that sounded urgent enough to make someone pull a pager out of their pocket.”
“By September, Hezbollah militants had 5,000 of the pagers in their pockets, and on Sept. 17, the day Israel launched its attack, the pagers began ringing across Lebanon,” the AP said. “Even if the person couldn’t press the button to read the incoming encrypted message, the device would detonate. The next day, Mossad activated the radios, and some of them detonated at the funerals of some of the 30 people killed in the pager attack.” “The goal is to send a message rather than actually kill Hezbollah fighters,” Agent Gabriel said on the broadcast. “If he had just died, he would have died. But if he had been injured, you have to take him to the hospital, take care of him. You have to invest money and effort. Those people without hands and eyes are living proof of ‘don’t mess with us’ walking across Lebanon. They are proof of our superiority throughout the Middle East.”
In the days following the caller bombing, the Israeli air force struck targets across Lebanon, killing thousands.
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, whose movements were exposed in the indiscriminate attack, was assassinated when Israel bombed his bunker.
The war between Israel and Hezbollah, which began with a surprise attack by Hamas militants in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, entered a ceasefire in November. More than 45,000 Palestinians have died in the Gaza war between Israel and Hamas militants.
The first witness, who goes by the pseudonym “Michael,” said on air that “the day after the pager explosion, Lebanese people were afraid to turn on their air conditioners because they were afraid they would explode too,” adding that “there is real fear.”
When asked by the CBS host if that was “intentional,” he said, “We want them to feel vulnerable. We can’t use the pagers again because we’ve already done that. We’ve already moved on. And they’re going to have to keep trying to guess what’s next.”
