The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan unveiled a project on the 22nd to produce hydrogen by water electrolysis with American companies in Texas and Louisiana, USA, and produce synthetic LNG from factory discharged CO2 and hydrogen-bonded methane and transport it to Japan.
The synthetic LNG project unveiled for the first time at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry meeting is the US Cameron LNG project invested by Mitsubishi. The liquefaction facility is used for synthetic methane production and transported to Japan by sea LNG carrier.
Yomiuri, which unveiled the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry meeting, said that Mitsubishi Corporation, Tokyo Gas, Osaka Gas, and Toho Gas will participate in the project, and natural gas liquefaction facilities and LNG storage tanks for the Cameron LNG Project, which addresses carbon emissions from US companies and renewable energy. Published photos of the facility.
2The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced that a detailed study on the production schedule would begin in 2023, and imports of 130,000 tons, or about 1% of the annual consumption of the three gas companies, including Tokyo Gas, would be imported from 2030.
Yomiuri said, “We are starting a business to synthesize methane gas using newly extracted CO2 and hydrogen and import it to Japan in the same way as liquefied natural gas (LNG).” “Synthesized methane does not actually increase atmospheric CO2 when burned. Each company plans to use it for decarbonization and stable energy procurement.”
