The Declaration of the Summit on Democracy stated that it “reaffirms the common belief that democracy is mankind’s age-old means to promote peace, prosperity, equality, sustainable development and security,” and President Seok-Yeol Yoon said he was a “freedom promoter in the international community.”
In a video address on the 29th, President Yoon revealed the spread of “freedom promotion” to the international community, saying, “Korea, which defended its freedom with the help of the international community 70 years ago, is now fulfilling its role and responsibility as a freedom promoter in the international community.”
In his speech at the plenary session of the Democracy Summit, US President Biden cited the United States, Angola, Croatia, and the Dominican Republic as specific examples of democracy being promoted since the first summit last year, Voice of America (VOA) reported on the 30th.
President Biden and President Yoon said in a joint statement that day, “The two countries share deep bonds based on common democratic values and respect for human rights (share deep bonds, rooted in our common democratic values and respect for human rights), and solid political , is committed to further strengthening the economy, security and people-to-people ties.”
The Declaration of Leaders of Democracy states, “The leaders of the countries participating in the Summit on Democracy believe that democracy, which reflects the effective participation and will of the people, promotes peace, prosperity, equality, sustainable development, and security. It confirms the common belief that it is humanity's age-old means of security."
According to the U.S. State Department, about 70 of the 120 participating countries supported the “Democratic Summit Declaration.”
In a speech, President Biden said, “Strengthening democracy is a task of the times,” and said, “Today we can say that the world’s democratic countries are becoming stronger, not weakening, and dictatorships are getting weaker.”
President Yoon said, “The process of Korea’s development has been a constant journey toward freedom, just as it has been in human history, and efforts to preserve it continue even now. South Korea, which defended its freedom with the help of the international community 70 years ago, is now fulfilling its role and responsibility as a freedom promoter in the international community.”
“Democracy is necessary to ensure that every voice is respected, that the human rights of all people are respected and protected both online and offline, and that the rule of law is upheld,” the summit’s ‘manifesto’ said. We will work to build strong partnerships that demonstrate that we provide peace, stability and prosperity for all.”
In a welcome speech at the Indo-Pacific Regional Meeting of the Summit on Democracy on the 29th, President Yoon said, "The participating countries of the Summit have one thing in common. All have developed democracy based on their belief in the universal values of freedom, rule of law, and human rights. "Dissemination of disinformation led by certain groups and forces distorts and disables the community's decision-making system," he said.
